Perhaps the most particularly curious type of melancholia is the one associated with the longing for a past that is no more: nostalgia. This is a past that can only be resurrected by memory, and this process is rather infectious in a cyclical and obsessive way, insidious and irresistible. Detachment from the past seems to be a definite human inability and whether this is good or bad depends on its effect on our daily lives.
